Our 5/6 class with Mr Le Couteur were captivated by the photo below in the school archives. So taken were they by the snapshot of a moment in post-war history at their school they decided to do a 2019 take on the theme. Well done!

“The air conditioning in each room plus a gas heater is the only form of heating. It is considered rare to have to sit outside before going to play in the winter, we usually sit in Mrs Willoughby-Greens room. The winters appear to be very cold. We do have shoes to wear, which is a huge relief....”

Ebenezer Public School in 1918

“The open fireplace in the school was the only form of heating and the fuel was dried timber cut by axes by some of the boys in the bush paddock belonging to the Bonus family below the school. It was considered to be a privilege to be picked for this job and also another means of getting warm before going into school. The winters appeared to be very cold in those days and it was a common sight to see ice on the puddles of water along the roadway. What may have made it worse was that it was in the days of the depression and many of us did not have shoes to wear. ...”
