This term 5/6L took part in whole school planning by helping me with the school's Bushfire Response planning and how much will it cost for parts only for a new school fence.
Problem 1
We have a 'shelter in place' policy if an imminent bushfire threat occurs. The question the students needed to tackle was: how many students can comfortably fit in two classrooms? Firstly the students had to create a scale drawing of the classroom, using 2D space skills. They then used mathematical thinking collaboratively to solve the problem, videoing their thinking and process.
Result
142 students can fit comfortably in 2 classrooms during a 'shelter in place' bushfire event.
Problem 2
Taking out labour and extra costs, how much is a school fence if we bought one to cover the length of the front of the school plus a bit more near the staff carpark?
Result
Answers varied but the ballpark figure is around $5000. Removing the old fence, tidy-up, digging holes, concreting and expertise make up most of the cost of a school fence.
